City Rail Link - Aotea | Mt Eden | Britomart

Site Complexities

The complexity of this project was second to none on a scale not seen before. We pumped over 102,000m³ of concrete and sprayed over 2800m³ of shotcrete.

The size of this project threw up many complex and challenging issues. We worked together with CRL as a collaborative team to strategise innovative and creative solutions for issues regarding under-ground work with limited space and access.

Aotea

Aotea Station required Ian Howe Concrete Pumps to pump down multi-level shafts running up to 400 lineal metres of pipeline to the pours. This was achieved by having multiple boom pumps on Albert St, reaching down portals to static pipelines which were run to either our spider crawler boom, direct into gate valves attached to large walls being poured, or directly into the floor pours. Space and access were always a critical factor at the Aotea site.

Britomart

We started at Britomart station pumping D-walls. This entailed running two truck mounted Winn line pumps consecutively to fill structural walls, it was important these walls were filled at the same speed.  We ran structural pipeline down several levels to tremie pipe systems in the walls. The D-walls were poured in conjunction with Soletanche Bachy’s Bentonite System.

Mt Eden

Mt Eden site is a major junction point for City Rail Link. Mt Eden required multiple boom pumps daily. Our boom pumps poured floors, roofs and walls by hooking onto gate valves.  To increase productivity we supplied a Sany high rise line pump running 100 lineal metres of static pipeline to our 36m Sany tower boom, which either reached pour sites or was used to feed further pipeline and/or concrete trucks to pour sites many kilometres into the tunnel. This enabled us to service several areas at one time, also allowing access for the boom pumps to work in areas close by.

At Mt Eden Station our robotic shotcrete rig with a chemical computer dosing system was onsite nearly daily for over 2 years, shotcrete was used as stabilisation in multiple areas.

Site Logistics

Logistics of a project of this magnitude required much advance planning and communication between all parties. With a demanding schedule of many daily technical pours, not only did we have to schedule pours, pumps and men, we had to ensure correct delivery lines were in place ready for the following days pumping on multiple sites.

At the end of the day none of this would have been achievable without our team of highly skilled operators, linesman and our wonderful team overseeing logistics in the office. Also the invaluable co-operation and support of the CRL team of engineers, designers, foremen, logistics personnel and Allied Concrete’s professional team.
