Where it all started
1980 - 1999
1980
Ian Howe's journey began when he moved to Auckland to start his career as a concrete pump operator with Russell Concrete Pumps. During the 10 years he was with Russells, Ian worked on many significant projects including Sky City, Sky Tower, Glenbrook Steel Mill, Marsden Point, and Mangere Bridge.
1990
Ian began his independent venture by purchasing his first Line pump, a Mayco P30 ball valve trailer pump, towed with a Nissan Patrol. He started working from a dirt floor garage on Stoddard Rd, before moving to Marua Rd with Russell Bricklayers.
1993
Harriet Howe joined the team at Marua Rd, followed closely by Willy “Patch” Haare. The fleet increased to 3 Line pumps, towed by Toyota Landcruiser's. The Landcruiser's came in British Red, this was the start of the red fleet that Ian Howe Concrete Pumps is now known for.
1996
Ian realised NZ needed reliable faster larger output line pumps for the evolving concrete pumping market. This was the start of a successful relationship with Transcrete concrete pumps. Ian was the first to bring Transcrete to the New Zealand market, both in his fleet and selling them to the NZ market.
1998
Ian Howe Concrete Pumps moved to its own premises at Railside Ave, Henderson. The acquisition of their first boom pumps, a 15m squeeze boom and 28m Putzmeister boom, marked the beginning of a new era.
2000 - 2009
2000
Ian visited China to obtain concrete pump parts. This was the first of many successful trips with quality control being paramount.
2004
Ian Howe Concrete Pumps moved to a more accessible location close to the motorway on Lincoln Road Henderson. The fleet now boasted 7 boom pumps, 5 line pumps, with a dedicated team of 14.
2010 - 2023
2012
The company outgrew the Lincoln Road site and relocated to a larger yard on Fred Taylor Dr at the end of the North Western motorway. The fleet had now expanded to 7 x boom pumps, 5 x Line pumps, 3 x Static high rise pumps and a crew of 20.
2013
Realising the need for larger booms pumps, Ian searched world-wide for reliable affordable equipment. This search took him to Junjin concrete pumps from South Korea. Ian bought the first Junjin pumps into New Zealand, a decision he never looked back from.
2014
Trent Howe joined the team full-time. Trent started with a Transcrete Trojan P60 line pump and quickly advanced to operating 38M Junjin boom pump. By the time Trent was 21 years old he was overseeing significant projects, Including Commercial Bay Project and Americas Cup.
2017
Looking to the future of the line pump division, Ian moved from trailer units to truck mounted PTO units. He chose Winn Engineering concrete pumps as these have larger output volumes and greater pumping distances, giving versatility. Once again Ian was the first to bring a brand to New Zealand's evolving market, with two Winn Engineering pumps from Australia.
Ian Howe is a leader that many follow.
2024
2022
Ian Howe Concrete Pumps was and is, part of the largest infrastructure project of its kind in NZ - City Rail Link. Due to the volume of concrete being poured, 3 new boom pumps, all with the latest technology, were added to the fleet, however this was not enough. Harriet searched world-wide for an 18 metre diesel electric spider crawler booms to service Aotea Station tunnels. Also added was a new 36 metre self-climbing tower boom for pumping at Mt Eden Station.
2024
Today Ian Howe Concrete Pumps still operates from Fred Taylor Dr with an impressive fleet of 15 boom pumps, 6 line pumps, 3 static high-rise pumps, tower booms, delta booms, shotcrete rigs, spider crawler booms, and a comprehensive range of delivery systems.
The team has grown to include 25 operators, 3 mechanics, 2 operations managers, and a fantastic office team of 4, showcasing the continuous growth and success of Ian Howe Concrete Pumps.
